Astrology permeates the history of Syria. It is not encouraged by present day Islamic attitudes. However even today the time for prayers and for fasting involve astrological considerations. The start of each month is determined by the appearance of the crescent moon! The Bedouins were the champions and perpetuators of astrology with their awareness of stars, planets movements and the implications. Abu Ma‘shar al-Balkhi (787–886), al-Biruni and Nasir al-Din al-Tusi (1201–1274) were prominent astrologers. There was Abu Ma‘shar (known as Albumasar in Europe) who wrote a treatise called the Book of Nativities. If one looks at Syrian poetry and literature, there are beautiful astrological associations. There are two stars in the Syrian flag!
